OZONE DAY CELEBRATIONS- 2021

I Mishika Goyal student of Birla Baika Vidyapeeth, Pilani feel privileged to be the environment ambassador of our school to create awareness regarding various environmental issues. On the world ozone day, I wish to create awareness about the stratospheric ozone layer, it’s advantages and different means of its preservation.

In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 16 September the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date of the signing of the Montreal Protocol, in 1987 on reduction of use the Chemicals that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Ozone is an allotrope of oxygen and its layer protects the planet from deleterious Ultraviolet rays of the sun reaching the earth.

The UV rays cause major health problems in human beings by inducing mutations in the DNA leading to skin cancers, cataract problem in the eyes & permanent damage to the cornea. It also affects the growth of green plants by depleting its chlorophyll, causing chlorosis which may consequently lead to reduction in global food supply.

The Stratospheric Ozone layer is a boon to prevent this disastrous UV radiation to reach the earth.

The human activities like indiscriminate use of aerosols, refrigerants like Chlorofloro carbon (CFC) & other halocarbons have led to the depletion of the ozone layer.

The depletion of ozone layer has resulted in the formation of ozone holes, the largest hole is formed on Antarctica on consistent basis.

The concern of exposure of Biologically harmful levels of UV radiations due to ozone depletion has been the main driving force for signing of international treaties & protocols like Vienna treaty & Montreal protocol.

Montreal protocol has led to decrease in almost 99% of Ozone depleting chemicals to be phased out which has been successfully led to the shrinkage of Ozone holes. It must be continuously regulated hence campaigns like this on World Ozone Day helps in creating awareness to discourage the excessive use of Ozone depleting chemicals.

It is believed that the sacred basil, the Tulsi plant (Ocimum sanctum) helps in restoration of ozone layer by producing nascent Oxygen which helps in Ozone formation. We the students of Birla Balika Vidyapeeth are committed to develop a Vrinda Kunj in our school which is a Tulsi garden & it will be maintained by the students as an initiative to protect the Ozone layer.

The only thing that can protect mother earth from getting fried is ozone layer. Let’s take an oath to protect ozone layer and hence protect ourselves.
